Many of you have probably heard of crate training a puppy, but not many have really looked into it to find out the best cage to buy and how to use it. Crate training refers to a dog cage, and it is best to start crate training as soon as you get your new puppy home, and one should purchase the cage, and accessories before even buying a puppy. First and foremost, you need a cage that will accommodate your new puppy, but not be too big or too small, because he needs enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down comfortably. However, you don’t want the cage to be too big that he can sleep at one end and still use the other end as a bathroom, as this would be a waste of time from the training point of view. In addition, getting him used to the cage slowly will allow him to see there is nothing to be afraid of, and in fact, he should end up treating it as a den, an area that he can consider safe.

Keep in mind, that many breeds benefit from crate training, especially smaller breeds that can have accidents around the home and that you don’t notice. Therefore, by taking your puppy out for a bathroom break before putting him in the cage, and taking him out once he is let out of the cage it will soon allow him to realize that bathroom time is outside the home. Moreover, starting off slowly, maybe putting him in the crate, or cage for an hour at a time, will get him used to it, and soon he will be comfortable being in the cage when you’re out for a while too. However, be sure to also put in a favorite toy so he feels secure.

Moreover, when crate training, be sure to take off any collar, or leash before placing him in the cage, this way he won’t be able to get caught up or choke. Nevertheless, just because you have a large breed puppy don’t be tempted to buy a much larger cage, or the training won’t be beneficial, and by the time he gets larger he won’t need a cage anyway. Finally, keep in mind, that crate training you puppy early on will house train him much quicker than any other way. However, remember that there will be exceptions to this method, but generally it is the best way to house train a new puppy overall.
