Proud puppy owners always think that their dogs have the chops to enter dog shows. Dog shows exist for a particular purpose. This is so as to assess the breed of dogs. Dog shows are tough and very competitive, and to enter your puppy into a dog show means to become impervious to critical remarks made about your dog’s breed. These remarks are critical, but they are honest.
Thinking your puppy is the most beautiful thing on earth isn’t enough of a reason to enter a dog show. Your love for your dog may be blinding you to many other facts that will disqualify him in a dog showing competition. It may have many faults with its conformation. Its breed may not be pure.
Before you enter your puppy to a dog show, you should first do some research. Check out the breeds online similar to yours those have won dog shows. Learn more about the standard of your dog breed. If you feel your dog has a good chance of competing well, then you can register it in the Singapore Kennel Club dog show.
The Singapore Kennel Club is the premier dog show in Singapore. Entering your dog into this dog show means that your dog is registered and is a breed that is qualified to contest in a dog show. In dog shows in Singapore, dogs are judged based on different criteria and there are different categories. Some of these categories have to do with the dog’s age. Dogs are judged on their conformation, grooming, agility, and obedience.
Entering your dog in Singapore is something that you and your dog have to be prepared for, and this article will give you an overview of what you need to know to participate.
The first thing to do is to register your dog with the Singapore Kennel Club. If you haven’t already bought a puppy, you can get one with the registered dog kennels. Here, they can tell you if your dog is of the proper standard to enter dog shows. It is advised that you take your puppy along with you for the registration so that they can determine what breed it is for themselves. Usually, puppies that are deemed to be of show quality attract an additional registration fee. Your puppy needs to have pedigree papers. These papers show that your puppy is a pure-bred. That is essential for you to enter it in a dog show.
Next, your puppy needs to get training. You can take your puppy for paid training classes, or you can train them at home. Your puppy, as a show dog, needs to know some basic behaviours that are necessary for a dog show. Your dog will learn such things as how to ‘stack’ and ‘gait’ in conformation training. Your dog should also be taught how to take restraint and handling well. Your dog will encounter these during the dog show, and be judged on how he/she reacts.
You also need to groom your dog properly, as this too is part of the dog show. Grooming, handling and restraint show the judges how much love and attention you give your dog at home.
Conformation classes are for both you and your dog. These classes give you lessons on how to display your dog during a dog show. Keep in mind that no puppy is the exact match of the breed standard in dog shows. That said, you should know the breed standard your dog most identifies with, and train him/her based on the qualities that specific breed is known for. Conformation classes enable you to show off your puppy in the best light possible, downplaying whatever faults it may have.
On the other hand, you could hire a professional dog handler. Professional dog handlers have a bad rap, for it is said that dogs presented by professionals have the highest chances of winning because they are professionals. Whether this is true or not, you can hire one to handle your dog in the show ring, or you can become the best handler for your dog and train your dog to perfection.
Classes, Breeds, And Groups
Each puppy competes in a dog show according to breed. Each breed is separated into classes. You have to figure out what class your puppy belongs to.
Minor Puppy – this is the class for puppies between 3 and 6 months old
Puppy – 6 to 9 months old
Junior – 9 to 18 months old
Intermediate – 18 to 24 months old
These are some of the classes your dog can compete in. If you ever want to enter your dog in a dog show, it would be wise to enter them when they are puppies. These classes are also divided into sex: male dogs are ‘dogs’ while female dogs are ‘bitches’.
Other classes include:
Best of Winners
Winners in the various classes compete in another part of the show called the Group Ring.
Groups acknowledged by the Singapore Kennel club include:
Note that each dog is judged as compared to its breed standard.
Your dog can only reach championship status when he/she has won three or more Challenge Certificates and has a total of 60 points. The certificates have to be awarded by three or more different judges at shows that are authorized by the Singapore Kennel Club.
You can hold rehearsals at your local kennel club before show time. Make sure to attend as many rehearsals as you can, so as to get a feel of the thing before the main event.
Now, there are usually two types of dog shows: benched shows and unbenched shows. In benched dog shows, you and your dog are required to stay to the end of the show. In unbenched shows, after your presentation, you can go home and watch for the final results.
At dog shows in Singapore, there is etiquette for you and your dog to uphold. Ask other pet owners for permission before approaching their dogs. Always keep your dog on a leash. If you attend a dog show with children, make sure they don’t run around and try to play with other dogs.
Preparing for and entering a dog show doesn’t have to be a strenuous affair. You and your dog should train as much as you can and still have fun with it. Keep in mind that the judges’ critique is professional and nothing personal against your dog. Do the best you can and most importantly for both your pet and yourself: have loads of fun!
