Is It Dangerous For Cats To Eat Dog Food

Can cats eat dog food? It’s a no-no to give dog to your feline friend. Cats are not small dogs. While a little taste of dog food won’t hurt your cat, long-term feeding of dog food certainly can. Pet owners should understand dog food is different from cat food. Both cats and dogs have different nutritional needs. For proper nutrition, cat owners are encouraged to feed their cats only food specially formulated for feline.

Dogs are omnivores, while cats are obligate carnivores. In order to survive and maintain their good health, cats must eat animal-based proteins to meet their nutritional needs. They require higher levels of protein compared to dogs. Taurine is an amino acid all cats require. Since dogs can actually make their own taurine,  it is not necessary to add taurine to dog food. Therefore, feeding a cat dog food will result in a taurine deficiency. Keep in mind that cats need taurine for normal heart function, healthy immune system, neurological development, bile salt formation, reproduction and vision. As such, taurine deficiency in cats can lead to heart problems, blindness and other illnesses.

According to Dr. Patty Khuly, vitamin A must be supplied in cat food. Felines need a different form of Vitamin A than canines do. Canines can use beta-carotene as a source of Vitamin A, while felines cannot.  And most dog foods do not contain vitamin A a cat requires. Your cat cannot manufacture the fatty acid which is known as ‘arachidonic acid’ and must have it supplemented in their diet.

In conclusion, feeding your cat an improper diet can result in many health problems such as heart diseases, deafness and blindness.  For your feline’s health, make sure she is eating quality cat food.
